Feature walls are a great way to bring added drama, but what about going a step further by adding a freehand masterpiece?

Creating a simple wall mural such as the one pictured isn't as tricky as it looks and because it's freehand, if you make a mistake with a profile, who would know?

This mural of hills was painted by all-round creative person and stylist Megan Harrison-Turner. Even she was surprised at how easy it is to transform a plain wall into something so attractive and dramatic.

First, Megan found an inspiring photo online, then sketched the hill outlines on the wall in pencil. Next, she added paint, using Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. The stylist chose a purple-themed palette. However, blues would work, too, as would warm browns, or even golden yellows. The colours here are Resene Spindle (sky), Resene Mischka (left hill), Resene Freestyling (right), Resene Santas Grey (right), Resene Mamba (right), Resene Hammerhead (left, behind table), and Resene Casper (sea). The floor is Resene Ivanhoe.

The Resene Multi-finish collection is ideal for a project like this, where tonal variation is key. The collection is at the heart of the Resene Total Colour System, with 896 colours on a series of 64 palettes.

The palettes are two paint chips wide, making it easy to compare colour to colour.
