The move towards quiet, tranquil interiors has taken a new direction in recent times, with homeowners looking for more refined materials for bathrooms and kitchens.

Kohler addressed this trend head on at the 2009 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, with the release of its innovative Honed White¢ surface for vitreous china plumbing fixtures.

Mike Terrill, Kohler senior product manager for color, says the Honed White surface provides a soft, textural feel, like a stone that has been gradually shaped and smoothed by nature.

"Honed White products are skilfully crafted by Kohler potters," he says. "They incorporate a special glazing that delivers a rare, unpretentious quality to contemporary and classic fixtures."

Terrill says Honed White is offered on many Kohler products, including the new Reve¢ and Strela¢ collections; the flagship Cimarron toilet; contemporary Purist fixtures, such as the Hatbox¢ toilet; Kathryn and Vessels-type lavatories; and other fixtures with simple, organic forms.

"The comprehensive product offering, combined with the versatility of the finish, makes it easy for designers to coordinate Honed White with a multitude of colors and materials," Terrill says. "Colors that coordinate well include Kohler White and Sea Salt, which appear on Kohler cast iron products. And almost every faucet finish works well with Honed White, including the new Vibrant® Moderne brushed and polished gold."

Terrill says the new Vibrant Moderne finishes offer a richer and more intense tone of gold than the lighter-colored Kohler Vibrant French Gold or the hues of the '70s.

"This gold is more like the color of honey or authentic 24-carat gold, which gives it an inherent sumptuousness."

The Vibrant Moderne finish is available on some of Kohler's most popular contemporary faucet designs. These include the complete Purist faucet collection, the Laminar flow bath spout and the WaterTile® bodysprays.

"The sleek, modern lines of these products juxtaposed with the rich Vibrant Moderne gold finish create a dynamic contrast that exudes an element of warmth," says Terrill.

The finish is available in brushed and polished options, both achieved through a PVD finishing process that creates a durable and lustrous finish that withstands scratching and tarnishing.
