Time is always of the essence on construction and development projects. Everything needs finishing as soon as possible, preferably yesterday. However, despite, or perhaps because of, the pressures of working against the clock, creative design solutions are often quickly attained.

On the Pearson Publishing project, Cape Interior Construction was responsible for the hard interior fit-out. Based around a series of sliding glass doors, the interior extends the theme of light-filled airy spaces that is suggested by the exterior, says Cape Interior's director David Howes.

"There are very few full-height interior walls inside, and they are in the board rooms and meeting rooms. The idea was to form small enclaves with 2.1m-tall, aluminium-framed sliding glass doors. Some enclaves were glazed above the door, while others were left open," he says.

To define the space, a thick beam of aluminium above the door was specifically requested. For Cape Interior Construction, this meant going back to the drawing board to redesign the working mechanism of the door. Once developed, the doors were extruded, manufactured and installed.
