Lighting plays a key role in the creation of an inviting ambience. Too bright and it is impossible to relax, too dim and it is difficult to read, entertain or work on hobbies during the evening leisure hours. It is important therefore to choose light fittings that illuminate with an even dispersal of soft light.

In this home, fittings and table lamps from European manufacturer Eglo light the open-plan living and dining areas. Their G9 halogen lamps produce a soft, even glow that is like a bright candle glowing through white glass, says Lighting Direct general manager Dean Fulford.

The seven-light Ascot fitting in the dining room has a wide diameter to enable a broad dispersal of light.

In the living room, the Bix ceiling pendant consists of four chrome rods that hold small white cylinder glass lamps at each end. This adjustable fitting offers a flexible lighting display.

Bix table lamps on either side of the sofa provide additional lighting. These are designed as decorative pieces that enhance the overall look of a room, says Fulford.
