Professional advantage

When looking for a kitchen designer, or indeed anyone who will be working on your home, it is worth checking to see if they are members of a professional body.

The professional organisation for specialist kitchen and bathroom designers, the Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute of Australia (KBDI), provides members with regular accreditation, training and professional development. Its aim is to ensure members consistently produce high quality designs, and are updated on industry trends, new products and developments.

Kitchen designer and KBDI member Kim Duffin of Sublime Cabinet Design is both a Certified Kitchen Designer and Certified Bathroom Designer. During his 15 years in the industry, Duffin has won a number of awards for his work.

"I like to get the layout perfect then deal with the fittings, finishes and fixtures. Everyone uses a kitchen differently, and everyone's needs are different," he says.

Client Rebecca Franklin says she felt it was important to use a designer with a professional status because she wanted her new kitchen to be functional, and to match the decor in the rest of house.

"KBDI designers focus on design and market trends. I wanted someone who would think outside the square," she says.
