Much of the work involved in providing carpentry services to the Auckland Art Gallery project started long before construction began on site. For Wallace Construction, one of the first major challenges was the procurement of the large quantity of New Zealand native kauri.

Wallace Construction manager Scott Thrupp says the collaboration between all members of the supply chain was essential to ensure that the supply, manufacture and installation of the prefabricated kauri components met the construction programme.

"Colour selection of the kauri was of paramount importance to achieve the architectural vision. Construction techniques were developed to enable the manufacture of the kauri components to continue while supply was identified and extracted from the bush."

Wallace Construction subcontracted Papakura Joinery to manufacture the kauri pod, column, louvre and fascia components. These were then installed by Wallace Construction's onsite team.

The acoustic American white oak flooring, which covers more than 3000m² of the gallery presented its own challenges. Wallace Construction undertook the procurement of the white oak timber and the installation of the complex acoustic substrate. The laying and finishing of the oak flooring was undertaken in conjunction with subcontractor Just Hardwood Floors.

In addition to these two challenging facets of the project, Wallace Construction's scope of work included more than 1000m² of American white oak veneered wall and ceiling linings to the gallery and administration areas; internal and external framing containing more than 80,000m of timber; installation of 284 solid core doors and thresholds; 2700m² of curved ply roofing and gutters; interior ply and MDF wall linings; and special interior finishes and mouldings.
