Prized designs
As well as successfully fulfilling the wishes of the homeowners, these kitchens met the criteria of Hadco's design judges
To win awards, a design will likely have to meet several criteria, involving aesthetics as well as functionality. For these kitchens, both finalists in Hadco's Designs that Matter contest, it was the balance between a traditional and a contemporary style that placed them ahead of the crowd.
Viking appliances were a direct request from both homeowners. For the design pictured left, completed by designers at CSI Kitchen & Bath, the challenge was to incorporate these large appliances into the kitchen without expanding the area.
"The clients wanted to update their galley kitchen, but did not want to expand it. The careful placement of the appliances, along with extensive storage options, allowed us to fulfill their requirements," says designer Debra Bobo.
The designers then used turned wood detailing to merge the contemporary look of the appliances with the more traditional style of the house.
Becky Sue Becker of Designs by BSB took a similar angle with the kitchen pictured right. Using turned posts and valance toe boards, along with glazed white cabinetry, she created a relaxed atmosphere with a clean, sleek look.
"The homeowner wanted an open floor plan that could accommodate two islands for use when entertaining. Guests can sit at the bar, or help with preparation at one of the three countertops. Viking appliances make it possible to have several culinary masterpieces underway at once," says Becker.
Accessories such as pull-out racks and pantry systems prevent clutter, while an iron pot rack gives the room a strong point of interest.
