Prize-winning kitchens

Authenticity is everything when you wish to restore a colonial home to its former grandeur. It was also the brief given to designers Ingrid Geldof and Davinia Ferguson who won the NKBA Canterbury regional award for the design of the kitchen featured above left.

As well as opening up the kitchen space to create an L shape, the designers incorporated a large chopping block on an island as a centrepiece. Other features include a working pantry, open shelving, plate racks and hand-painted cabinetry finished with wax for a natural patina. The kitchen also features a Rangemaster stove and decorative Italian tiles.

In contrast, a modern approach was called for in the kitchen featured above right. Designer Shevaun Davison of Gunzzini Kitchens, winner of the Central regional award, says the kitchen reflects the clean lines and modern colour scheme of the 1970s house. Part of an internal wall was removed to open up the kitchen and allow more sunlight into the room. A new peninsula is a focal point for casual dining and entertaining guests. Materials include Panelyte stainless aluminium, which features on the roller door, the kickboards and the back panel.
