Sliding pocket doors open to view
To provide an easy flow between the great room and the outdoors, the designer chose the path of least resistance he removed the walls. Large sliding pocket doors custom manufactured by Redstone Custom Door were installed so the entire corner of the great room could be opened up.
Patrick Davis, vice president sales and marketing, says the space, which opens up to 22ft on one side and 18ft on the other, is the largest clear opening that Redstone has accommodated.
"The 2¼-inch-thick door panels feature a stile-and-rail engineered construction, which comprises an LVL wood core to increase strength and resist warping. This ensures the doors will tolerate the climate extremes."
On the exterior, the doors have aluminum cladding with a long-life kynar paint treatment.
Davis says the seamless flow between the two living areas is enhanced by the near-flush surface provided underfoot. Just three-sixteenths of an inch protrudes above floor level the rest of the track is embedded within the floor.
"This means it is easy to walk in and out of the room without having to step over anything," he says. "When fully opened, the sliding doors are concealed within the side walls, so there is also no visual clutter to break the clear opening."
Davis says the doors feature energy-efficient Low-E glass, and lift-and-slide hardware. Handles rotate each door panel so it is lifted slightly to allow an easy gliding movement, and then dropped again to provide a tight seal.
Redstone Custom Door also provided a large pocket door for the wine cellar, which features a single pane of glass the size of two normal doors.
