In Central Otago, an area of our country famed for its natural beauty, it makes perfect sense to let a little of the outdoors in. Natural materials not only reflect the beauty of the local environment, they also provide lasting, practical surfaces.

Joinery Specialists is an Otago company that takes pride in meticulous craftsmanship and the use of natural materials, says manager Graeme Emmerson.

"This kitchen is an excellent case in point," he says. "As with all our projects, meeting the client's needs to the letter was the first priority. Here, the owners wanted a clean-lined, contemporary space, but with an accent on natural materials."

To achieve this, Joinery Specialists introduced an expansive wood benchtop combined with a mitred, 60mm Quarella stone work surface under the windows.

"Individual wood sections were measured, cut and laminated together to create the large feature countertop," says Emmerson. "Dealing with materials like wood and stone requires close attention to detail, and we employ highly skilled crafts-people to ensure every project fits like a hand in a well-tailored glove."

The overall attention to aesthetics and finishing detail make this a good example of Joinery Specialists' work, he says.
