Precinct CONCEPT
The design for Westfield Albany is based on raw, natural materials and forms used to differentiate one zone from another
As the first greenfield retail development for Westfield and one of the larger malls in the southern hemisphere a prominent design statement was needed not just for Auckland but for the whole of New Zealand, says Steve Jensen of Jensen Chambers Young (JCY).
As concept architects, the firm developed the overall design concepts to show the form, shape and general massing of the centre.
"The concept centred around the use of raw, honest materials and natural finishes, and massing to create distinctive precincts, such as the marketplace and high street precincts. Different materials and forms distinguish one zone from another," says Jensen.
The architects worked on other elements, including the general ambience concept, designs for specific areas such as the outdoor food and entertainment plaza and internal mall precincts, and the design of New World supermarket for Foodstuffs NZ.
Other projects undertaken for Westfield include Westfield Pakuranga, Westfield Queensgate and Westfield Manukau. JCY's design of the New World Supermarket in Hamilton won a NZ Retail Design Award for 2006 and regional NZIA Award.
