Smooth, sleek finishes, square edges and strong horizontal lines are key looks for contemporary kitchens today. And while the design is critical to achieving the right look, so too are the materials.

For designer Mal Corboy CKDNZ, a specialist in contemporary kitchen design, Corian is a preferred option for benchtops.

"Homeowners who are investing in a top-of-the-line kitchen expect quality products and materials," he says. "There are a number of reasons why Corian works so well. It creates a seamless, clean, linear look, which complements the streamlined look of contemporary kitchens. I also like the fact that I can do anything with it. For example, Corian benchtops can be cantilevered without worrying about weight issues."

Corian can be shaped to any form, which makes it well suited to the current trend towards long benchtops that are either extra-thick or very narrow. It can also be curved to suit Corboy says he is currently working on a design that features a rounded edge.

"Corian is not only flexible to work with in both design and application, it's also warm to touch, which is a large part of its appeal."

Corboy says clients also appreciate that Corian is a hard-wearing, low-maintenance product.

"People lead hectic lifestyles these days and they don't have the time to spend maintaining their kitchen. They want good-looking surfaces that will stay that way with minimal effort."

Corian comes with the full backing of The Laminex Group and a 10-year warranty.
