A soft white palette and understated detailing evoke the rural charms of a traditional European kitchen
Take a twist of this, and a pinch of that: like fusion cooking, a kitchen that blends different signature styles works best with a large measure of restraint.
For this project, the renovation of a good-sized kitchen in an older property, the homeowner was looking for a traditional look, with elements of French Provincial and English country.
Simon Hodgson, sales director of Nouvelle Designer Kitchens, says the success of this award-winning kitchen lies in the designer's ability to balance various elements and achieve an understated look.
"It's important not to be too fussy. While you need details, such as flutes and corbels, you don't want to overdo it, otherwise the effect can look almost cathedral-like. It's about finding the right blend, so that the overall ambience is warm and cosy."
To achieve the desired look, thedesigner, Brian Patterson, incorporated a butler's sink, glass display area, open shelves and a large, freestanding cooker.
"The round sink and taps bring another dimension to the space, as does the 80mm bush box island top with French Provincial edging," he says.
Nouvelle Designer Kitchens won the HIA NSW Kitchen Designer of the Year award for this kitchen in 2007. Another of Brian Patterson's traditional kitchens won the same award in 2006.
