In any large piazza, the paving underfoot is a defining feature, and Aotea Square is no exception. With its wide steps leading down from Queen St, the paved area at Aotea Square forms a natural amphitheatre, enhancing the civic amenity.

John Fillmore Contracting (JFC) works included all the structural concrete, from the car park roof deck up; all the above-ground structures, including steps, walls and terraces; and more than 7500m² of paving.

JFC was faced with many challenges during construction. Working around demolition and reconstruction of the new car park roof meant the staging of works put pressure on the programme from the outset. Having to negotiate the wet winter months also meant JFC worked around the clock to bring the project in on time.

The main features of the project included the construction of the Queen St steps, the main entry steps leading up to the Aotea Centre, and the walls that define the southern border of the square.

All the precast concrete elements used in the construction were designed specifically for the project. The Queen St steps and terraces are a beige Aotea All In mix; the main entry stairs are a honed misty grey pebble mix; and the south walls and feature walls have a honed black finish.

Another feature was the use of Aztec Red granite paving, which covered more than 6000m².
