"Combining the existing kitchen with the laundry room allowed us to create a functional open-plan space suitable for large and small gatherings," say the Santellis.

The cabinetry is crafted from exotic African paduk, which adds warmth and brings visual interest with a strong vertical grain. For something out of the ordinary, the island was finished with a spectacularly patterned Italian veneer.
