This house was designed as a weekend beach house, set amongst tree-covered dunes, narrow streets and older homes.

"Without expansive views we wouldn't usually put major living rooms upstairs," he says. "However, for this design it was effective to place a secondary living area, spare rooms and the garage on the tight, existing plateau. This lessened demand on the upper level, giving us the opportunity to maximise outdoor living spaces, with decks and a pool extending out from the kitchen and main living areas.

"As a result, the house has a feeling of spaciousness without us needing to cut too extensively into the tree-clad site."

Upon completion, the owners elected to make the residence their full-time home.
