With its many gables and complex design, this new roof was well suited to the Nullarbor tile profile from the Wunderlich terracotta range

Sun and heat the very qualities that draw people to the Gold Coast also have a significant effect on building materials, especially roofing. But no matter where you live in Australia it makes sense to consider the local conditions before you embark on a new home project.

For this showhome in Robina, a new suburb on the Gold Coast, the developer specified Wunderlich terracotta roof tiles from CSR Roofing. Bradley Jones, director of Dirod Homes, says the company needed a durable, quality product that would complement the design of the house and other materials used in its construction.

"The roofing, which is a significant feature, needs to keep looking good year after year," he says. "The Wunderlich terracotta tiles will achieve this."

Jones says the Nullarbor tiles also provide the right profile.

The flat, slate look suits the house design, while the ridge capping enhances the streamlined look," he says.

Stephen Powell of CSR Roofing says that although the Nullarbor is 20% lighter than other tiles of its type, the terracotta tile is particularly strong.

"The durability of Wunderlich terracotta tiles is particularly important for Australian homes subjected to climatic extremes," Powell says. "In the fierce heat of summer, the tiles are slow to absorb heat and allow the roof to breathe. This helps keep your house cooler for longer. These terracotta tiles also need little or no maintenance, and won't crack or fade."

Powell says the non-glazed, matt tile also has very good drainage.

"It is specifically designed to drain water across the face of the tile as well as via a water channel at the side. This prevents water build-up, even when strong winds push water up the roof."

Nullarbor tiles are available in five colours, ranging from black-grey through to natural terracotta and blue. They come with a 50-year performance and colour guarantee.
