Outside the box
Described by the architect as a freestanding loft house, this new home brings an urban aesthetic to a natural setting

Doors and windows in the Cedar Lake house were custom designed to reinforce the contemporary, modernist look of the home. Pella Windows & Doors, a company that specializes in custom design and manufacture, worked closely with the architect to determine the best solutions.
Keith Westover of Pella Twin Cities says composite windows were designed for the front door, and the large east- and west-facing openings. These were specially mullioned to ensure structural integrity over the large openings.
Westover says the composites incorporate a diverse product mix. Products from Pella's Architect and Designer Series were paired with the company's Clad Frame Support windows, which feature at the side and above the sliding doors, bringing maximum light to the interior.
"The windows are designed so they appear to slice through the structural columns," says Westover. "In reality, the frame stops at the block. While this is a significant architectural design feature, it did prove a challenge for the installers the specifications were detailed down to the last eighth of an inch."
The long, narrow bands of windows along the sides of the house feature Pella awning windows. These are banded together and mullioned end to end with Clad Frame Support windows. Pella also supplied the aluminum that wraps around the ends of the bands of windows.
Westover says design flexibility is a feature of the Pella collection. The company frequently mixes and matches its product lines to meet both price and design considerations.
