Small kitchens do not have to beunderstated: strong colours can add drama without overwhelming the space, especi-ally when the look is clean and simple.

Interior designer Greg Natale chose bright orange and warm brown, offset by neutral grey and off-white, for this kitchen at the rear of a renovated terrace.

"Most people are quite conservative when it comes to choosing colours, but this homeowner wanted a bright, retro look."

The main work surface comprises one long, thick benchtop with Smeg appliances integrated into the cabinetry beneath. The cooktop and oven are both 600mm wide, for a unified look, and fit under the benchtop without taking up too much space.

"The stainless steel of the cooktop and oven adds an element of sparkle to this bold kitchen," says Natale.

The oven has six functions including fan forced baking, conventional baking, a grill and fan grill. Safety features include a triple-glazed glass door. The hob has four burners and a triple-ring wok burner.

The Smeg CK2000 concealed rangehood has an extraction rate of 1600m³/hr and a four-speed fan.

"The rangehood is fully integrated, which allows the overhead cabinetry to be uninterrupted. It's compact, which is another advantage," he says.
