on a winning streak
Timber joinery in the refurbished areas of SkyCity was undertaken by Central Joinery
Another element of the refurbishment that required high-quality, yet slightly unusual products was the joinery. Central Joinery was contracted to source some obscure timbers, and to manufacture these materials under a tight schedule, says manager Shaun Simpson.
"To accommodate the fast turnaround required by SkyCity, we worked six days per week, and at times this stretched to seven. We worked early mornings and tried to avoid the evenings, when SkyCity can be very busy."
Central Joinery created the gaming floor entrance ceiling, timber veneers for wall panels and columns, the security podium, the Baccarat Bar and ceiling, and the eastern side cashiers. For the Baccarat bar, babinga veneer was selected.
"The timber is also used for the wavy feature panels. This, and the honeydew acrylic chosen for the column panels, had to be ordered and shipped from overseas," says Simpson.
To save time, the company pre-ordered materials whenever possible. The joinery was made in the factory, then assembled on site.
"It can take three weeks to get the materials required. When you only have six weeks to create a joinery item, this presents a real challenge, but we have managed to meet all SkyCity's deadlines."
The company has a ten-year working relationship with SkyCity and Aspec Construction. In the past, it created joinery for the Member's Club, Platinum Room, Private Gaming Area, Orbit Restaurant, Tapas Bar and Bar 3.
