The way in which the financial processes of any project are executed is a key element in its success, and accountability, particularly when public funds are being expended, is crucial.

Rider Levett Bucknall provided its expertise in advisory and cost management services to KiwiRail in the rollout of the DART projects. For New Lynn Railway Station, Rider Levett Bucknall was engaged to undertake specialist probity auditing on the early contractor involvement contract and to facilitate the negotiation of funding contributions with key project stakeholders including Auckland Transport, regional and city councils and utility providers.

Senior quantity surveyor for Rider Levett Bucknall Helen McCondach says that in an open-book cost scenario, such as the redevelopment of the New Lynn station, the execution of the project financial process, providing accountability for publicly funded expenditure and managing the expectations of the collaborators and stakeholders, has led to favourable budgetary outcomes and a successful end result.

Connal Townsend, chief executive of Property Council New Zealand, says work on the New Lynn Rail Station started at full pace and continued with the same momentum.

"This will deliver a user-friendly transport hub incorporating the latest in technology, materials, finishes and public amenities. Property Council is very proud to represent members involved in this project. Our job is to advocate on their behalf on important national and local policy issues that help them to undertake their work in the most efficient and productive way. We also facilitate networking opportunities that assist business relationships, along with providing research products and publications," says Townsend.

"Property Council is a unified voice for the commercial property industry from industrial property, to retail and offices. Individually, our members design, fund, build, engineer and support important projects throughout the country. This is one example of a fantastic outcome, especially for the New Lynn community," he says.
