The second busiest station in Auckland after Britomart, Newmarket sees in the order of 3500 passengers every day, and projections are that this will rise to 17,000 people a day by 2016. While part of this has been a result of the recent improvements to the rail network, Newmarket has always been one of Auckland's busier stations. For Dominion Constructors, who carried out much of the concrete works for the redevelopment, working in a live rail environment in a busy traffic interchange provided a challenge. Much of the work had to be staged to cause the least amount of inconvenience to rail passengers and rail closures had to be restricted to quiet times, such as between Christmas and New Year. Dominion Constructors undertook the concrete works to the SlabTrack rail bed to the north and the triangle area, the platform fronts, the concrete structure, the main concourse, the link bridge and entrances, paved surfaces, plus the staged replacement of the Remuera Road bridge.
