To design a comfortable, traditional house to fit Australian conditions, the sun, insulation and windows all need to be considered.

After 40 years of building in Australia, Fred Miniter of Pratt Miniter Consulting has devised a formula that factors in these elements during the design process. Solar gain harnesses the sun's power to make the house brighter and warmer. Both the winter and summer sun are taken into account for year-round free solar power.

Correctly installed insulation, or sarking, in the roof will save money and eliminate the need to continuously run air conditioning. Double-glazed windows, such as a PVC double-hung or sash units, are best for the Australian climate.

"These three elements should automatically be included in any design particularly if you want an energy-efficient home," Miniter says. "Using eco-friendly design, a house can save 2500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually and save money on air conditioning costs as well."

Pratt Miniter takes into account wind patterns for best placement of the house to avoid draughts and benefit from natural air flow. Topography is also considered as this may affect the comfort and energy-efficiency of the house.
