Space is always at a premium in a kitchen even in a large house there is a need to have everything close to hand. In fact, an efficient work triangle is just as much about storage solutions as it is about the position of the refrigerator, cooktop and food preparation area.Morgan Cronin, the designer of this kitchen, says one of the secrets of effective storage is to ensure the cabinetry is as deep as possible."Modern hardware provides much better access than in the past," he says. "Full-extension drawers, for example, ensure that every inch of space is utilised. Similarly, corner units, such as the He¤fele Le Mans unit shown here, provide swinging trays that bring all the contents of the cabinet within reach." Cronin says wherever possible, he specifies 650mm-deep by 600mm-wide cabinets."The 600mm-wide doors match the size of standard appliances, including most dishwashers and ovens. And today it is possible to get corner units in varying sizes, including 600mm."Soft-close systems are now standard for all hardware companies, and are specified by most designers. Similarly, innovative drawer compartments help streamline kitchen storage. These can include drawers for spices and kitchen knife sets, adjustable utensil dividers and stainless steel cutlery trays that can be washed in the dishwasher. Cronin says electronic drawers that open at a touch are increasingly specified, due to the design flexibility they offer. Many designers appreciate the seamless look that can only be provided by an absence of handles and recessed pulls.Pantry design is also changing. To maximise space, Cronin says he avoids wire basket systems behind doors. Instead, he provides a deep work bench for small appliances, large below-bench drawers and open shelving that allows all the contents to be seen at a glance.
