Catering to the needs of a rapidly expanding population is not just about infrastructure, housing and retail facilities. Recreational amenities also need to keep pace, which is precisely what's happening in Auckland.

The Auckland Council facilities featured here have all been designed to minimise any negative impact on surrounding neighbourhoods, and this includes potential problems with noise.

Earcon Acoustics has consulted on each project at every stage, from resource consent through to construction. A spokesperson says the projects are exciting for their new design parameters.

"Noise management and acoustic ambience are common design factors. Each project has been designed to reduce noise levels in the neighbourhood but without compromising the experience of patrons using the facilities."

The featured projects include Wero, designed by Creative Spaces. Wero is adjacent to the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau and is the first whitewater park and kayak centre to be built in New Zealand. It is due to open in April 2016.

Creative Spaces has also been involved with the design of two other projects Earcon Acoustics has worked on the Albany Stadium Pool and the Otahuhu Recreational Precinct Stage 2. The Albany pool is also due for completion in 2016, while the $30.9m Otahuhu precinct has just opened. This facility includes a library and aquatic centre.
