Night magic
With its glow-in-the-dark island, glass tabletop and crisp Ice Snow CaesarStone® benchtops, this kitchen has a bold, sculptural presence
Just when you thought you had seen it all, along comes an innovative project that challenges any preconceived notions you may have about modern kitchen design.
This contemporary kitchen, one of two created for a new apartment building on the banks of the Waikato River in Hamilton, puts the spotlight firmly on the food preparation and dining areas.
Designer Robin Caudwell of Designer Cabinets says the kitchen is more akin to an art installation.
"The owner wanted the kitchen to make a strong design statement," he says. "It also needed to reflect the apartment's minimalist architecture."

Caudwell says CaesarStone® benchtops in Ice Snow provided the exact shade of white to match the lacquered cabinets, ensuring the kitchen would have a crisp, cool look. The 19mm glass tabletop, which is an extension of the island, was also chosen to reinforce the minimalist feel.
"Once the planning was under way, it was clear that the kitchen needed to be transformed by night," says Caudwell. "Consequently, LED strip lighting was introduced around the base of the island and at the top of the cabinets. There is also a light box at the end of the table, and within the island itself. All these materials help turn the kitchen into a piece of art, rather than a merely functional work place."
Caudwell says practicality wasn't sacrificed, however. The CaesarStone benchtop, made from 94% quartz aggregates, provides a highly durable, stain- and scratch-resistant surface.
CaesarStone is supplied by The Laminex Group. The company also supplied the Scilm profile 2364 aluminium-framed Etchlite doors.
