Now, more than ever, the kitchen is proving to be the focal point of the home. It's the place where everyone pauses for a snack or a catch-up before rushing on to the next part of their busy daily schedule.

Not surprisingly, appliance manufacturers need to keep pace by engineering products that can adapt to changing needs. And for leading manufacturer Fisher & Paykel, the answer lies in modular appliances.

Mark Elmore, head of design at Fisher & Paykel, says that for years consumers and designers have looked to modular systems as space-saving solutions. More recently, they are also appreciating the customization, aesthetics and accessibility of modular appliances.

"Modular kitchen systems are becoming the solution of choice for homeowners, designers, builders and architects," Elmore says. "Modules can be positioned at the optimal ergonomic height and position based on what is comfortable to the user the possibilities are endless."

Fisher & Paykel's modules include 36in CoolDrawer refrigerators and DishDrawer dishwashers, 30in ovens, 36in cooktops, and warming drawers. Elmore says each unit has standardized dimensions for easy assembly, repair, layout flexibility and ease of use.

"Nowadays your kitchen island might include warming and refrigeration drawers instead of just cabinetry. These can be in stainless steel or fully integrated for a seamless look. Aesthetics are never compromised."
