New possibilities
Open, light-filled spaces are connected to external areas in this centre, inspiring creativity from its students and users
Graeme Burman, trustee of Eastgate Community Trust, envisioned a place with ongoing facilities for young adults who needed special care. Aside from the facilities and activities available within the centre, the building required certain physical attributes to be suitable for this use. Bruce Miller of Design 89 was contracted to create the design. He says a well-covered entry and parking space was needed for easy access to the building for its numerous daily events.
"The interiors are of generous dimensions to assist in the free flow of activities, and to provide wheelchair access. This also allows staff to maintain visual contact with the occupants throughout the building."
The main activity room needed to be both warm and light, and link to the north-facing outdoor courtyard. To reduce glare without spoiling the outdoor view, Inner Concepts' Sunlusion roller blinds were used throughout.
These blinds are made from robust transparent fabrics and have a high level of UV protection, so they provide shade and also guard furniture against fading and discolouring. All sunscreens in the Sunlusion range are composed of fibreglass or polyester yarn with a durable PVC coating, which inhibits mould and mildew.
