It goes without saying that a company will take advantage of its own expertise when designing new headquarters. The new Philips head office features some of the company's most innovative technology solutions specifically its lighting applications. The lighting design was undertaken by Philips' own lighting design team national specifications manager John Braggins and lighting designer Rachel Bryant, in conjunction with architect Terry Randall of Design Architectural.Braggins says the team looked first at the functionality of each room. It then aimed to create the most work-friendly and visually pleasing environment using a technologically advanced, energy-efficient lighting system that would reduce long-term operating costs. In terms of the design, the lighting controls within the office space mean staff may never have to reach for a light switch again. A view of the lighting design. One control, the Philips LuxSense, is a light-sensing device, designed to save power by compensating for natural daylight."LuxSense minimises demand for artificial light automatically," says Braggins. "This is critical for an application such as the Philips building, which has a high level of natural light streaming in."Another control is the Philips OccuSwitch, a movement detector that uses a sensor to automatically switch lights on and off as required.Philips has also built in Dynamic Ambiance lighting controls in the entrance corridor and meeting room spaces. A view of the lighting design. Dynamic Ambiance changes the tone of the light in areas of the building from warm to cool and back again, depending on the time of day. The system is based on human biorhythms."By programming the lighting effect to match the time of day we aim to complement the moods people are likely to be experiencing," says Braggins.Furthermore, Philips Multi-dim DALI (Digital Addressable Light Interface) compatible lighting controls can be used to control a single lamp or the lighting of an entire building. Up to 63 devices can be connected to a single Multi-dim system, with a maximum cable length of 300m.For further information, contact Philips New Zealand, Lighting Division, 8 Antares Pl, Mairangi Bay, PO Box 1041, Auckland, phone 0800 4 Light (454 448).
