New frontiers
With its stained wood cabinets and benchtops, and imported cast iron hardware, this new kitchen has the look and feel of an Arizona desert house
No matter whether you are renovating, or planning a kitchen for a new house, design consistency is essential.
For the owners of this kitchen, built by Country Kitchens in Christchurch, there was never any doubt as to its design. The kitchen is in a plastered house built in a style reminiscent of an Arizona straw-bale house. Consequently, the kitchen needed to have a similar desert-frontier look.
Country Kitchens manager Chris Freeman says the stained macrocarpa cabinetry, with its framed tongue-and-groove doors, is a key feature. The red beech benchtops, which have been handcrafted to provide a natural hewn edge, also contribute to the Western-style character.
"The kitchen hardware, themed tiles and many of the accessories were imported directly from Arizona, which adds further authenticity," says Freeman.
Other key design elements include plate racks, sliding willow baskets, a double butler's sink, and a custom-designed chimney hood.
Chris Freeman says Country Kitchens specialises in both traditional timber and country-style kitchens.
"Working with wood is our speciality, but we can use other materials to achieve a particular look or meet a budget."
