Nature-inspired furniture can bring the outdoors into your home

New Zealand is internationally renowned for its beautiful scenery and its population of outdoor enthusiasts. Little wonder then that the country's designers are increasingly turning to nature for inspiration.
Furniture designer Simon James says a popular national trend is interiors that are designed to flow between inside and out.
"I believe that New Zealand designers are continuing to push the boundaries with indoor-outdoor flow. We are really blurring the line between the two, and I think when choosing the right furniture for your home you need to consider what pieces can adapt to both environments."
James believes that incorporating New Zealand's unique nature into living spaces helps the country's furniture designers to differentiate their products internationally. He also believes that while our geographical isolation has limitations, it provides one distinct advantage.
"We are a little bit more limited in this country, in terms of production, so this can dictate the outcome. However, I think we tend to become more innovative with existing materials or manufacturing processes, to give the product a point of difference globally."
Yet one thing remains the same wherever one lives in the world, and that is the desire to keep things current, says James.
"Tastes will always vary between individuals and people don't want something that will be dated in 12 months. Longevity is important with both look and construction," he says.
When selecting furniture, James says it is also important to consider practicality, together with the room's overall aesthetics.
"Durability and functionality are two of the most important considerations when buying furniture but the room should look balanced. Here, for instance, the random-designed hanging constellation light offers a good contrast to the clean lines in the room."
