National honours
Australia's top bathroom designer and bathroom project were recently named at the 2005 HIA Australian Housing Awards
Receiving recognition from one's peers can be one of the best forms of compliment. Each year, the Housing Industry Association's Kitchen and Bathroom Awards honour Australia's best projects and designs, as judged by industry representatives.
The HIA Bathroom Awards recognise the talent of designers, renovators and builders who plan and create quality bathrooms, says executive officer Nicole Wilson.
The winner of this year's HIA-Homesite Australian Bathroom Designer of the Year was Western Australian-based Daniel Smith, from Beyond Developments.
"The client's request to incorporate marble finishes dictated the final aesthetics of this room. The chamfered wall-feature was clad in an Emperador Scurro marble to create the initial impression," says Smith.
The marble theme continues through to the bath surround, benchtop, toilet hob, shower seat and floor border inlay. Due to the abundance of texture and colour created by the marble features, the vanity cabinetry was kept as simple as possible.
HIA's judges commented that the bathroom was a testament to the designer's ability in overcoming challenges.
"Faced with a number of technical and spatial constraints, the designer has managed to resolve the difficulties and create a functional and practical space."
