Multi purpose
Space for buffet-style entertaining and a built-in television were incorporated into this design
Kitchens are often more than simply a place to prepare food. This kitchen, for example, is a place for the kids to do their homework, a venue for home entertaining, and somewhere for the owners to sit back and watch television.
When Maria Telfar of Interior Design Concepts designed this kitchen, she says it was important to listen to the specific needs of her clients.
"Each individual is different, so they are going to have individual needs that have to be met. You can only achieve this with custom-built kitchens," she says.
The owners wanted to open up the kitchen area to give better access to outside, and to enable people to move around the kitchen without interfering with the person preparing food at the workstation. The television was installed in the cabinetry to allow visual contact between people in the kitchen and the kids watching television in the family area.
Telfar says utilisation of space is the most important factor to consider when designing a kitchen and it must be considered from the outset.
"Good design doesn't just happen it needs to be planned," she says.
Telfar comes from an architectural drafting background and is qualified in both bathroom and kitchen design.
