This spacious entertainers kitchen designed by Richard Landon combines ease of cooking and socializing with a wealth of storage. Cabinets are in Alder with a Sable stain and Espresso glaze.

A well-equipped scullery can transform the operation of a centrally positioned kitchen and its on-show aesthetic.

When designer Richard Landon came to this project, the owners had clear ideas about what they wanted. Plenty of room for the family to interact with the cook, multiple ovens without looking like an appliance showroom and an improved connection to entertaining areas. Opening the kitchen up through the interior to a view of the mountains at the front of the house was another request.

However, sightlines to the peaks were blocked by the entry, dining room and an office, says Landon.

"Our solutions included extending a 12ft-wide addition across the back of the home, relocating the dining room so it is virtually in the kitchen instead of in a far corner, and repurposing the former dining room as the entry and powder room. This rearrangement provides a view through a staircase canyon' to the front of the house.

"To improve sociability, I introduced a U-shaped island where most prep work and cooking happens. This creates an inviting spot where many people can gather to chat or share in the prepping."

Hardwearing surfaces were on the clients list of requests for this kitchen designed by Richard Landon. To this end the doors of the island and the scullery base cabinets are surfaced in Formica Quarstone. A large cooktop is at the heart of the island with a prep sink alongside, accessible to chef and casual contributors alike. The style of the glass-paneled doors behind might suggest they lead to a living space or a porch not a kitchen within a kitchen.

Even with two ovens at the heart of the island, storage space on the inside face and display cabinets on the outer, this was still only half of the new functionality.

"A U-shaped scullery was introduced and, at 12½ft x 7ft, is like a kitchen within a kitchen," says Landon.

"Not only does this provide the desired walk-in pantry, it is also the key to making the main kitchen easy to keep clean and free of clutter. Dirty dishes can be cleared away out of sight, straight from the nearby dining table. I chose pocket doors with glass panels to imply they might lead to a connecting public space, playing down the utilitarian aspects."

The scullery also hides a large double oven and a dishwasher a smaller version is positioned in the island.

"This ancillary workspace, fitted with a powerful extractor, is ideal for keeping pungent cooking odors away from the living spaces," says the designer.

Overhead cabinetry provides further storage. In the main kitchen, too, there is more than meets the eye.

Cabinetry to the left of the copper sink is recessed into the fireplace surround, so what appears as a shallow cabinet is really a very deep one, ideal for larger platters.

All in all, the new family-oriented kitchen has a warm and welcoming feel, that balances formality and function.
