THERE ARE spaces in every building, office or retail area that, architecturally speaking, cry out for a point of difference. One New Zealand company has provided the industry with a new design option to fulfil such a brief, and it is this product KPMG's designers specified for the firm's new Maritime Towers offices.

After three years' research leading to a major innovation in the manipulation of plasterboard angles, Corner Solutions International (CSI) has revolutionised a system for producing round-edged corners on plasterboard walls. The product, called the Roundy, is manufactured from paper-faced plasterboards, and is designed to replace square corners where desired.

Roundys can be manufactured as convex, concave and S-bend angles. The advantages of a round edge over a sharp corner include less damage to the plaster in high-traffic areas, easier flow where space is at a premium, and a sense of fluidity in the design.

Four Roundys were installed in KPMG's video conference room, utility rooms and ninth-floor reception area.

CSI marketing manager Margaret Hensch says her team received excellent feedback from Fletcher Construction project manager Scott Pemberton, who praised the quality of both the workmanship and the installation of the Roundys.

"We bend the plasterboard to our client's specifications down to a radius of 200mm. There is no cutting or fracturing of plaster, and you get a seamless, joint-free corner, professionally installed," she says.
