Minimalism with a heart

Paring back design to its essential elements needn't mean compromising comfort, says Holger Schubert of Archisis Inc

Good design is not simply about the way a home looks it's also about creating spaces that work for the people using them. And while a home may have a strong, minimalist look, it can still be highly functional and comfortable.

Archisis Inc is a company that places an emphasis on minimalist designs and pared-back interiors that are user-friendly as well as warm and welcoming. Specializing in both residential and commercial architecture, the company is headed by former industrial designer Holger Schubert.

"While we like to reduce everything down to the bare essentials, this is not at the expense of functionality," he says. "The interface between the design of a house and the people who live in it is always important."

Schubert says the company's designs typically include plenty of streamlined storage, enabling items to be kept out of sight.

Creating a balance in the use of materials is also paramount. Schubert's designs feature materials, such as stone or concrete, translucent glass and anodized aluminum.

"While these materials are rather cold by themselves, when used with wood and the right lighting, a warmer look can be achieved. It is a question of creating the right balance," he says.

Schubert launched his architectural career with the complete renovation of his own home, featured on these pages.

"It is a departure from industrial design, yet it includes so much of that," he says. "I wanted to make the home a portfolio piece, incorporating the design philosophy to the fullest extent possible. Every element of the home is complete."
