Midas touch
Hand-painted, gold-leaf moldings and Regency pilasters characterize this new kitchen from Clive Christian

Space is often considered the greatest luxury, but it can pose design challenges for a kitchen where everything needs to be close at hand.
Alyson O'Hanlon, designer of this large Clive Christian Regency-style kitchen, says that while the functionality needed to be closely addressed, the sheer size of the kitchen did have advantages.
"We were given the luxury of integrating our new Mayfair mantel, which forms the centerpiece of the kitchen," she says.
The mantel, like all the cabinetry, reflects the Clive Christian attention to detail. Cabinets were hand-painted in situ, in a custom green, and adorned with gold-leaf moldings. The inside edge of the door panels, the Regency pilasters, and the interior of the display cabinets are also coated in gold leaf.
"The result is a kitchen that literally glitters," says O'Hanlon. "It's an opulent look that complements the rest of the home's interior."
To provide a kitchen that would also be easy to work in, the individual workstations were contained as much as possible. The cooking center, for example, is quite compact, and the integrated refrigerators, island work spaces, prep sink and range are in close proximity to one another.

Similarly, the clean-up area and dish storage are on a separate wall, positioned so the owners can enjoy the view.
