As some of the largest surface areas in your kitchen, your benchtops contribute to the look of your workspace. However, as well as providing a visual impact, your surfaces need to withstand the rigours of day-to-day use.

One way to achieve aesthetic impact and enduring performance is to consider new products that combine the strength and look of natural stone with the versatility of man-made polymers.

German-engineered Askilan surfaces are imported by Ikon Commercial, says director Glen McLachlan.

Askilan is a solid surface material consisting of crushed quartz, polyester resin and long-strand fibreglass. As the second hardest mineral on earth known to science, quartz gives the Askilan surfaces their durability. The polyester resin binds the product, while the fibreglass provides enduring strength.

Twentythree colours are available in the Askilan range.

"The surfaces are built to last, and the earthy palette of tones on offer won't fall from fashion over time," says McLachlan.

There are two Askilan products available Askilan and Askilan ES. The original offers fine particles of quartz for a subtle effect, while Askilan ES features larger pieces of quartz that creates the look of a solid granite surface. Askilan ES produces a higher sheen.

As well as withstanding knocks and scrapes, Askilan surfaces are non-porous a must for hygienic food preparation. They are also resistant to stains. The product's versatile make-up means surfaces are highly heat resistant, withstanding temperatures of up to 180ËC. The composite material is also resistant to chemicals.

"Askilan offers an attractive solution to a need for fresh surface ideas," says McLachlan. "This adaptable material is suitable for both kitchen and bath-room countertops and splashbacks. It can also be used to create feature walls and floors."

Askilan surfaces are also suitable for commercial environments. The product can be adapted to a range of custom designs and is available with a seamless finish.

"A seamless surface join offers advantages in terms of both hygiene and easy cleaning," says McLachlan.

In the event of damage to your surfaces, Askilan-trained fabricators can make seamless repairs, usually on site. An authorised team of Askilan fabricators operates nationwide. Many of these tradespeople have up to 20 years' experience in the business.

"Ikon takes pride in introducing innovative, dependable products to the marketplace, and we are particularly pleased with the performance and popularity of the Askilan range," McLachlan says.
