Master suites recall tropical resorts

Integrating the bedroom and bathroom is a concept that has been widely used in resort hotels throughout Asia and the South Pacific.

At its heart, the idea spells luxury such suites are reminiscent of spas and pampering. They create a private sanctuary where it is easy to relax and escape everyday family or work pressures for a time.

This suite has the appeal of a tropical resort hideaway, but it is in fact within a highrise hotel. The Banyan Tree development in Macau, designed by Simon Kwan & Associates, with interiors by Chhada, Siembieda & Associates, was modeled on the concept of a typical Asian resort.

Architect Oliver Wong says that although the suites are treated as a typical module in a highrise hotel tower, the design sets out to create the ambiance of an individual bungalow or a resort villa.

"We wanted the suites to re-create an indoor spa retreat," Wong says. "Continuity was essential. The spaces within the suites needed to flow seamlessly. The water in the spa pool by the window enhances this sense of all the spaces flowing into one another."

Wong says the bathroom cannot be considered a separate area. Rather, it serves as a showpiece that merges with the rest of the interior.

Interior designer Stephen Ng says the color and material palettes were selected to complement the identity of the Banyan Tree hotel group.

"There is a definite focus on natural materials, such as stone and wood. There is also a richness of color, strong contrasts, layered tone-on-tone palettes, sheen and textural fabrics. Water was also used as a calming influence."

Rich rose red velvet drapes and upholstered elements are teamed with dark lattice wood screen doors and wood furniture. Dark wood also edges a freestanding wall that helps to separate and define the seating area and bedroom within the overall space.

The bathroom is lined with natural stone and the vanity features a mix of stone and wood. The soaking tub is also made from natural wood.

To enhance the intimate ambiance, the lighting operates on dimmer switches, and there are candles and aroma sticks for guests to use.
