Introducing modern technology in the home certainly makes life easier, but it is not enough for many of us we want old-world craftsmanship as well.

Monterey Woodworking has successfully provided both in the kitchen, bathroom and entertainment cabinetry in this penthouse.

Company owner Troy Stratton says an extensive search was required to locate suitable quantities of high quality wenge and macore for the exterior veneers.

"We had to match the veneers on all continuous runs of cabinets to ensure a uniform and uninterrupted flow of grain and color."

Because the penthouse is in a high rise, access was limited to a service elevator, says Stratton.

"This limited the size of the cabinetry to the capacity of the elevator. Assembly of some of the larger items, such as the media center cabinets, had to be done on-site."

The kitchen features wenge face veneer, which was chosen for its deep chocolate coloring and linear uniformity of grain.

The cabinet boxes are a European-style frameless construction and the box interiors are made of finished maple.

Dovetailed solid maple drawer boxes are mounted on Blum Tandem concealed slides to minimize exposure of hardware.

Accessories such as cutlery trays, pull-out trash cans and tray organizers were built into the cabinetry to maximize space.

Cabinet doors feature Blum concealed hinges, which allow them to be adjusted.
