Making waves
A new community aquatic and leisure centre in Tauranga is deceptively large on the inside, packing many features under one roof
Swimming pool halls, where chlorine is used, are tough on any paint surface. For the interior and exterior paint finishes of the Baywave Tect Aquatic and Leisure Centre, the architects consulted with paint specialist Resene.
Three colours were picked to bring vibrancy to the building and identify the centre as being situated on the coast in Tauranga, says Jasmax project architect Chris Jack.
"Nearby Mt Maunganui and its Pacific coastline provided an inspiring, natural palette of colour and texture for the building accents," he says. "A theme of Paua/Pacific and pohutukawa formed the basis for the colour selection."
Resene Padua and Resene Azure reflect the centre's water theme, he says, while Resene Monza and Resene Flashpoint capture the intensity of blooming pohutukawa flowers and highlight the facades.
"The predominant background wall colours are a combination of greys and whites from Resene The Range Whites & Neutral that are warm and neutral and complement the building materials."
