A classic remodeling problem is how to create the impression of greater space in a small area. Introducing mirrors to reflect light and volume is one strategy but there are other ways to achieve an airy feel.

This bathroom has a modest floor plan but designer Nicola Manning has fulfilled the client's request to transform it from a tired nook into a sun-filled spacious room.

"Painting the walls and ceiling in white was one design move that helped expand the space visually," says Manning. "A white back-painted glass backsplash behind the bath and vanity contributed to this and brought in more reflected light."

The white tones are offset by a rich wood floor, which helps ground the bathroom. The marble countertop and matching embedded shower floor create a balancing two-tone effect, making the pale wall tones even more airy and effective.

"I chose a freestanding bathtub and wall-hung vanity and toilet to further the impression of space," Manning says. "The eye sees past the edges of these utilities, so more floor space is visible."

Similarly, a glass shower stall ensures maximum physical volume is on show.

"Clutter can easily drag a space in, so I selected cabinetry with large drawers and deep, compartmentalized interiors," says the designer.

In addition, power outlets and other functional necessities are tucked out of sight in the cabinets behind the push-to-open mirrors.

Remodel complete, the bathroom has a serene, open feel and presents an inviting place to linger.
