Mad Men meets Manhattan Beach
Fun and casual with a feeling of sophistication, this interior has touches of 50s accents, some vintage and some new with a 50s influence
Interior designer: Chris Barrett Design
From the interior designer:
The owner wanted a fun, casual home with a touch of sophistication. We gave him what we call Mad Men meets Manhattan Beach. Itʼs fun, contemporary and has touches of 50ʼs accents, some vintage and some newly designed furniture that have a 50ʼs influence.
The house has three levels with some serious ocean views.
The plan is open so we had to make sure that the rooms flowed seamlessly from one to the other.
We chose to do this with colour, keeping the furniture stream lined.

On the uppermost level is the living room/dining room/kitchen and guest rooms.
We usually start designing with the interior but in this case we started outside on the upper terrace.
We designed the outdoor furniture with Ilan Dei using chartreuse vinyl cording and powder coated frames. We jumped over the adjacent living room and used a chartreuse fabric in the dining room.
On the family room/master bedroom/ pool level we chose orange cording on another version of the outdoor furniture. On the Family Room walls we added a chartreuse grass cloth and we designed a wall of bookcases.
There are pops of strong colour throughout.
