A large island in an open-plan kitchen and family area is likely to serve a number of useful purposes. It can be a buffet or servery when the owners are entertaining, a convenient and roomy worksurface, and an unobtrusive barrier between the main part of the kitchen and the rest of the living spaces.

The kitchen of this house built by David Reid Homes connects seamlessly with both indoor and outdoor living areas. To make entertaining friends and family groups easier, designer Judy Cooksley has recognised the value of having a large and uncluttered island. Most of the appliances are grouped along the rear wall of the kitchen. Only the dishwasher and microwave are in the island, and both are tucked out of sight below bench height.

Cooksley selected the latest models from the Smeg collection of appliances.

"I particularly liked the appearance of the gas hob. The cast iron pan stands over the four burners are in the shape of crosses, which I think gives it a very modern look," she says.

Instead of the more traditional design where two pairs of burners form a square, this new model has all four in a single line along the bench.

The oven was selected to complement the silver colour of the cabinetry and the cream benchtop.

Another new model recently introduced by Smeg is a horizontal, fully integrated 90cm-wide single-drawer dishwasher, which is available with a left- or right-wash option for smaller loads.

The 618-litre refrigerator and freezer includes a built-in icemaker. Two large vegetable and fruit crispers and a chilled meat keeper help to keep fresh food in good condition.
