Looking lively
Colourful carpets point the way at Albany Senior High School
Colour is an integral part of the interior design of the Albany Senior High School, and it's not limited to the paint on the walls. Colourful carpets also help define key circulation areas. All the carpet tiles are from the Godfrey Hirst Base Line and Base Plate ranges. These tiles are manufactured from highly advanced, solution-dyed nylon fibres, which ensures they can withstand the rigours of a busy high school.
To create a neutral, textural backdrop for the accent flooring, the design team from Jasmax specified tiles in the colour Striation a charcoal-coloured tile with a self stripe. This tile is a restful colour that creates a sense of visual depth, says architect Roy Blok.
"We then added splashes of bright colour, including a chequerboard pattern for the light voids in the centre of the building. This is reminiscent of speckled sunlight falling onto the floor. It's a colour and pattern that draws you to the centre and the light."
The designers also specified a wide, brightly coloured carpet tile runner for each of the learning commons. "These carpets reflect the different colour imprint of each space," says Blok. "They run right into the learning commons and underneath the long benches, helping to draw people into the room."
Sustainability is another bonus for the school. The Godfrey Hirst carpet tiles are recognised by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC), achieving a maximum 100 points under the Green Star New Zealand rating tool.
