Look both ways
Fancy a light meal? This crisp, light-filled black and white kitchen doesn't overwhelm spectacular bush views to left and to right
Designed by Damian Hannah, German Kitchens
The owners were based in rural Hunua on a lifestyle block and the kitchen had to fit in with their extensive renovation and allow the space to seem open and bright.
During the design process we looked at many options and positions and the best design was having the kitchen open at both ends to make use of the indoor/outdoor flow that was available at each end of the kitchen.
The kitchen is based off the proven galley style kitchen with a large balanced island that incorporates the main sink, off-set seating and built-in wine fridge.
The back wall is perfectly symmetrical and includes the integrated separate fridge and freezer at each end and the ergonomically positioned ovens – both at the same height.
The pantries are underneath and above the ovens, with full pull-out shelving.
The cooktop area allows landing spaces for both ovens and room around the flush mount cooktop for prep and cooking.

The seating is the only unbalanced part of the kitchen and was purposely designed to be down one end so the homeowners could sit and admire the setting sun over the rolling hills.
The cabinetry was manufactured to a unique specification with a high gloss white glass on the back wall to reflect the nature and the bush that surrounds the home. At the same time, the matt black island was to be the earth, and feature with no reflection.
The unique Fenix laminate benchtops were designed to match the Fenix cabinetry perfectly to give a complete uniform appearance. Complementing these elements, a matt black tap, sink, seating legs and stools were also specified.
The existing rustic flooring was uniquely stained to throw gold and bronze tones throughout the kitchen and warm up the monochromic blacks and whites.
I specified the Miele integrated appliances where possible and chose the black ovens, cooktop and wine fridge to match with the black island.
Lastly, aluminium ventilation grills were positioned under and above the white cabinetry to allow the required ventilation and airflow for all the integrated appliances.
