With good traffic management, the flow around a site will be smoother for all users

Being able to arrive at work or visit a building, park safely and easily, and leave without effort may seem simple and straightforward expectations, but they are all only possible with good traffic engineering and management in the vicinity of a building.

At Carlaw Business Park, traffic management issues were dealt with by specialist consultant Traffic Engineering and Management (TEAM).

Phillip Brown of TEAM says the key to a successful traffic management plan is to understand and appreciate the needs of the building's tenants and incorporate these into the site.

"Our objective is to create as efficient and effective a carpark layout as possible for all its users," he says.

TEAM's brief included traffic access, carpark layouts and pedestrian connectivity to integrate the area around the building and ensure it is safe for all users.

In particular, the design had to accommodate the needs of the National Library, with its frequent deliveries and collection of books, at times in bulk. The safe passage of small vehicles such as private cars had to be considered and integrated with the requirements of large trucks making deliveries.

"One challenge was to maximise the connections with local roads, which provide convenient routes to the motorways and the CBD whilst minimising the impact on the surrounding traffic environment. The shapes of the space allocated for parking called for creative thinking, and we had to work around the constraints of railway abutments on the site," says Brown.

TEAM has worked with McDougall Reidy & Co on a number of other projects. The company's experience includes large and small commercial, industrial, residential, educational and retail projects.
