Light, spacious living areas are of prime interest to new home buyers. As well as encouraging a sense of well-being, a house that's designed to make the most of natural light will promote energy efficiency.

Statesman Homes calls its latest development The Metropolis the urban house of light. A modern fae§ade featuring strong geometrical shapes gives way to a carefully designed interior, says the brand manager of Statesman Homes, Lee Morris.

"Internally, the design plays with natural light," he says.

"Large areas of glass invite sunlight to create special effects on materials such as mini-orb steel, vitreous terrazzo tiles and reflective chrome."

A neutral colour scheme subtly enhances the effect of natural light in the living spaces. Architectural details include niche display shelving in the foyer and a full-length feature window in the ensuite.

With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, the home's layout is designed to accommodate the needs of a modern family. On the ground floor, the kitchen forms part of the open-plan living and dining area. The breakfast bar features a decorative stainless steel front and a 10mm toughened glass serving shelf supported by short, stainless steel poles. Lower cabinetry is finished in wood to soften the mix of glass, steel and stone.

To complement the kitchen's semi-industrial look, the team from Statesman Homes specified a range of Kleenmaid appliances in stainless steel, says Morris.

"The Kleenmaid range of European products offers both aesthetic appeal and functionality perfect for the modern design of this kitchen."

The Designer Series 56-litre oven has multifunction programmes including a programmable roast probe to provide optimum cooking flexibility. Concealed, pop-out button controls help to maintain the oven's streamlined look. A European Domino Series cooktop and a stylish wall-mounted canopy rangehood with halogen lighting complement the oven.

Features such as shelving and a wine rack provide additional storage around the recess of the refrigerator, a stainless steel GE side-by-side profile refrigerator from Kleenmaid .
