Lifestyle choice

A preference for two side-by-side ovens dictated the design and the choice of Smeg appliances for the kitchen of this new home

It will always be a toss-up whether to include two smaller ovens in a kitchen or one large one. The decision depends on a variety of factors, such as your cooking style, the size of your family, and the amount of entertaining you do.

For the owners of this new home, the choice was easy. They opted to have two Smeg 60cm wall ovens.

Kitchen designer Jules Minkhorst of Premise Design says they felt having two ovens side by side offered greater flexibility for cooking and heating food, than a single large 90cm-wide model. The two 60cm ovens each offer ten functions including grill, conventional, fan grill and fan bake.

"While a 90cm model is essential in the United States for the Thanksgiving turkey, I find a pair of smaller ovens is more suitable for New Zealand," says Minkhorst.

The reflective, blue-tinted glass door on the Smeg oven gives it a smart, polished look, which helped determine the kitchen's appliance and material selection.

As well as the two ovens, the kitchen's back wall features a 72cm gas cooktop with five burners. This is mounted into a 20cm-thick CaesarStone Snow benchtop, which creates a sleek, contemporary look. The kitchen also include a Smeg side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, which features an electronic ice-and-water dispenser.

The contemporary-style kitchen is enhanced by the choice of a Smeg Power Pack extractor. This model tucks neatly into the upper cabinets and is invisible from the kitchen. Its extraction rate, at up to 1600 m³/hr, is powerful enough to remove the worst steam and odours.

Keeping with the contemporary clean-lined look is the Smeg microwave, which is built into the lower cabinetry using a matching trim kit.

The owners also selected a dishwasher from the extensive Smeg line-up. This semi-integrated model has a stainless steel control panel, which matches other appliances in the kitchen.
