Lifestyle choice
Upholstered furniture with a focus on design and quality is reflected in pieces available from David Shaw Furniture
Flexibility during the manufacturingprocess is one of the benefits of buying furniture that is crafted locally. One can select the fabric and even request modifications to the design in order to better meet their individual requirements.
This flexible approach is typical of David Shaw Furniture, a local company that designs and builds furniture for the residential and high-end commercial and boutique markets. The company can individualise each piece of furniture to meet specific client's needs, unlike imported items, says manger of sales and marketing Grace Calder.
"Clients will often provide the fabric or have it specified by their interior designer. Everything we create can be customised, as it is individually handcrafted and finished to exacting standards," she says.
The company employs computer technology for precisely routing internal components. Southland beech, one of New Zealand's hardest woods, is used for the framework and is stapled, screwed, dowelled and glued for extra strength.
Webbing from Germany is used, and seats are cross-webbed for enduring stability. High-density foam developed especially for David Shaw provides seat cushioning.
"All components are selected on the basis of their quality and durability and all furniture undergoes strict quality controls," Calder says.
